So as you all know, Thursdays are our traditional going-out nights since we sometimes travel on the weekends and some of us are done with classes that day. Tonight our group was (originally) smaller, since Courtney is out of town and Barrett was MIA all day. Miriam, Alice, Jackie, and I met up to go to town and stopped in to Taaffe's, where we actually found seats (normally it's crowded beyond belief) and listened to the great live traditional music. I want to get some on CD sometime! While we were there, several people came up to us who pegged us as Americans and talked to us. It was a little disgruntling to be branded so easily, but pleasant to talk to them all the same. We also met two Irish guys, whose names I'm not even going to try to spell, who came along with us to The Front Door after Taaffe's closed.
At the Front Door, which was crazy crowded, we once again got lucky and found some stools in a corner. We sat there for a couple hours (until 2 a.m., oy vey) and experienced things like: some girl buying Miriam a yager bomb, which meant she was drunk the rest of the night; an awesome crazy dancing man in the corner; lots of gyrating old men; and a lot of Irish people who were interested in talking to us just because. It was a long night but it was really fun. The second pub had lots of good music to sing to, so even though Jackie and I weren't drinking, we still had fun.
On the walk home, the four of us linked arms (more to keep Miriam upright than for camaraderie, but it was still warm!) and debated whether it still counted as Thursday. Regardless, I think we're all ready for bed at this point...and I'm typing as fast as possible so I can sleep without forgetting to blog again!
Besides that, my day was quite full. I went to my early class after signing up for housing online, then spent 3 hours in the library studying. It was crazy: even though you never seem to see students here doing work, the library is always completely packed. Forget getting a computer--even the desks are completely full. I walked around for ten minutes before finding an open chair at a table.
An odd thing I noticed when I was home today was the sound of an ice cream truck. I really wanted to run out of the apartment complex and stop it, since I can't remember ever getting ice cream from one, but figured it would be too late. It seemed odd to hear one here, but the Irish do seem to like their sweets!
A couple of days ago I was describing how students are really intense about elections here. Polls were open until 9 p.m., so at the start of my 4 p.m. class no fewer than FOUR people running for office came in and gave us their campaign speeches. They've been doing this all week and have people handing out flyers everywhere. I can't wait to see who won to see if all that made a difference.
After a quick supper in my disgusting kitchen (which I completely bleached and cleaned over the weekend and has been trashed again since Tuesday...I'm refusing to do anything but my own dishes as a protest of their annoyingness), I went to rock climbing and got certified to climb without a mentor. Alice came after a bit and we climbed together, but they just changed all the handholds on the walls for a competition and now they're all too hard for me, apparently. I could barely get up halfway on the easiest wall, and the other ones--forget it. Four feet off the ground if I was lucky. I'm so sore now; I only hope I'll get better, since they won't change to holds again for at least six months.
And that was basically today! Tomorrow will be interesting because of the rugby game at night and because everyone seems to have dates, which we will all need to gossip about on the bus ride there. Good times...feels like being a middle schooler. As I mentioned, I'm mad tired, so I'm going to cut this short and go crash.
Good night!
