You'd think that since I'm in Ireland, all I have to worry about is being sober and taking lots of trips, right? Well, I've just remembered that no, I also have to apply for an internship for this summer (since I don't want to get stuck in the mall again). In typical Jess fashion, then, I've spent the past two nights compiling a list of 26 different places where I could apply...which really means that now I have absolutely NO clue.
I mean, I don't want to just apply to one or two places and hope for the best. But what if I get 26 job offers? That would stink too.
My immediate solution was to sort out the ones that need reference letters and email a couple professors at home to ask for their help. I figure that if they think those four internships are worth their time to time write a letter, then I'll apply there. Anything else will be on me and depend on how well I can doctor up my resume and bang out a cover letter.
And there's always the problem of housing, and money, and transportation...aah!
So let's forget about that for the rest of the nigh t. I realized today why so many people are in the Castle class: because there is one field trip to look at four or five castles in the area...and all you get graded on is one final essay and an exam that the professor says even a chimpanzee could pass. I don't think I'm that hairy, but I guess that's good...He told us in class today that he is petitioning for a larger room, but he knows that we won't get it. Basically, then, we're all going to be very good friends by the end of the semester!
I also have a once-a-week class on Tuesdays in Women's Studies. I took an introductory WMS course last semester with Gabe, taught by this astoundingly flaky and tangential woman. She always told us random stories and just kind of rambled about whatever came to her mind instead of sticking to the syllabus.
I don't know if it's just coincidence or if all WMS professors are the same, but this Irish professor is just like Profe Brennan. She spent the first hour telling us random stories about people who we could find on the websites from the timetable...and then 30 minutes on a 10-minute exercise about dead famous women. And then we talked about the Romanovs. Meanwhile, there was actual stuff we were supposed to be talking about, according to the syllabus/timetable. She is even kind of absent-minded like Professor Brennan. If this is what all WMS classes are like, I don't know if I can stand minoring in it!! The similarity is quite remarkable. She's only teaching two more classes, then we'll have guest speakers, so I'm sure I'll make it. :)
To support what I wrote yesterday, I saw a sweatshirt today at the bookstore...it's 35 euros (which is about $50), but if I don't much the rest of the week, I can get it. At least then I'll be warm! I also got a book yesterday, but it's the third in the series, so I have to find the first two (and the fourth) before I can read it. I think I'm going to go over the weight limit in my suitcases just from all of the books I keep getting. :) I'm so sad...NOT.
I've got to admit, I've got a couple of candy wrappers sitting on my desk waiting for their cameos so you can all see them! I promised myself I wouldn't eat any more until these ones are up...so it's been a candy-less week so far. My camera batteries died, so once I get new ones, you'll see some photos for sure.
It's funny--I can never really decide if this blog is supposed to be like a diary or more journal-like. Sometimes I'm really good and stick to a topic, and then sometimes (like today), I just ramble on about anything that comes to mind! I guess it's just my mind making up for not being able to actually talk to any of you in person. Bear with me!
I think I'll stop being random for now, though. Good night!
